Here's the finished Feather and Fan set for my new step-granddaughter. It took a long time to knit and I had to re-design the pattern for the bonnet, but it worked out in the end!
Here's the pattern for the bonnet:
"Feather & Fan" Baby Bonnet
Revised by Sandy Davis
Materials: Knitting worsted weight yarn. approx. 2 ozs.
US #6 straight needles
US #6, 16” circular needles
Gauge: 10-11 sts to 2"
Directions:
Top of bonnet
Using straight needles, cast on 60 stitches. Knit 2 rows.
Feather and Fan pattern:
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: K6 (garter st. border) K2tog 2 times, (YO, K1) 4 times,
*K2tog 4 times, (YO, K1) 4 times* - (repeat between * 2 times MORE)
K2tog 2 times, K6 (garter st border)
Row 4: Knit.Repeat these 4 rows 8 more times.
Back
Row1: *K8 K2tog, repeat from *
Row 2: *K7 K2tog, repeat from *
Row 3:*K6 K2tog, repeat from *
Continue in this manner until you K2tog across the row. (6 sts remaining)
Break yarn, thread through stitches and tighten to close. Sew crown seam.
Neck band
Using small circular needle, pick up and knit 38 sts around bottom of bonnet – 19 stitches from each side of center seam. Do NOT join.
Knit 3 rows back and forth (garter stitch).
(Eyelet row) K1 *YO K2tog, repeat from * to last stitch, YO, K1
Knit 3 more rows and cast off very loosely. (I use a larger needle)
Run pretty ribbon through eyelet holes and tie to close. (Not too tight or you’ll choke the baby!)
4-5-08: Edited to add the word MORE (in red), to avoid confusion with the feather & fan portion of the pattern.
nice - been looking for an un-boring baby's bonnet for a while ;D
ReplyDeleteOh, I hope you like it!
ReplyDeleteI would love to see a photo of your completed bonnet!
Do you happen to know what size head circumference (around the forehead or so) this bonnet will fit? My mother asked me to knit a set of clothes for her baby doll from when she was little, but her doll is bigger than the one pictured -- she told me the doll has a 13" measurement around the forehead. I really like this pattern, and I would love to be able to adjust it to make for my mother's doll. Thank you!

Hello qatipay!
ReplyDeleteThis bonnet is designed to fit an actual newborn baby, so I would imagine the head circumference would be about 14 to 16 inches. The doll I used as a model has a head circumference of 14 inches. Good luck to you!
Ah, thank you! For some reason I remembered my mother's doll as having a bigger head than an average baby, but I guess not. This will not be too hard, then! Thanks again. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful hat! I will knit it for my grnd daughter. Where do I get the pattern for the blanket?
ReplyDeleteI would like to knit that too!
Sylvia
Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI used the "Pretty Fans & Feathers" pattern in "Our Best Knit Baby Afghans".

But, you can probably find a free pattern online for a "Feather and Fan" baby blanket.
Hello Sandy, in row 3, if you follow the pattern, having 60 stitches, you only use 48 stitches. Is there a mistake in the pattern? I really love the hat, I would like to make it for my grandaughter, who will be born in 3 weeks. Thanks, Sylvia :-)
ReplyDeleteThere is no mistake in the pattern. You might have forgotten to do a yarn over or something.
ReplyDeleteTry, try again! Good luck!
I tried again and it still didn't work! I will explain to you exactly what I did and then you can correct me (please?). Stitches 1 to 6, knit. St 7 & 8 tog, 9 & 10 tog, y/o, k11, y/o k12, y/o, k13, y/o, k14, st 15 & 16 tog, st 17 & 18 tog, st 19 & 20 tog, st 21 & 22 tog, y/o, k23, y/o, k24, y/o, k25, y/o, k26, st 27 & 28 tog, st 29 & 30 tog, st 31 & 32 tog, st 33 & 34 tog, y/o, k35, y/o, k 36, y/o k 37 y/o, k 38 and I still have 22 st. in the needle. What do I do next? Thanks a lot! Sylvia :-)
ReplyDeleteYou just left out one repeat between the asterisks. You should REPEAT between the asterisks 2 times, so that means you'll do the part between the asterisks a total of 3 times. That should fix your problem.
ReplyDeletePlus, remember to end the row with K2tog 2 times, and Knit the last 6 stitches.
Thank you so much! I knew that I was doing something wrong! I thought that I had to do it only 2 times! How silly ha ha! I will write to you when I finish the hat. Sylvia :-)
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I make mistakes like that with patterns all the time. *hug*
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your baby bonnet!
how can I change this pattern to fit my four month old daughter? Is there a way, I'm kinda of new to knitting patterns.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how to make a change in size to my pattern. I'm new at designing, so you and I are BOTH learning! :)
ReplyDeleteYou might want to look online for a different pattern. I bet you'll find something you like. Good luck!
ok, thanks for trying!
ReplyDeleteSandy, this is adorable! My newborn great-niece Lyndahl is gonna be the cutest baby in Columbus after I make this for her. Thanks for sharing the love.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work! that bonnet is really cute!
ReplyDeleteWhat an adorable baby bonnet this made!! Thank you for creating the pattern!!
ReplyDeleteHi! I altered an existing free bonnet pattern online that was designed for sportweight yarn. After figuring out how many stitches would work in worsted weight, I decided to share it with everyone.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the pattern for the blanket? My cousin is due in a couple of months and I was wanting to make her a blanket in this pattern but when I make it myself I always get confused on my stitches. Could you help?
ReplyDeleteI used the "Pretty Fans & Feathers" pattern in "Our Best Knit Baby Afghans".

ReplyDeleteHi there,
I am knitting the baby bonnet and when I come to doing the back with the instructions below, it does not come out right. The first 3 rows seem to be fine, but then you continue you do not end up with even stitches for the K2tog. You can end up with 2 extra stitches after doing the k2tog and you can end up with 1 stitch trying to get to the end. What am I doing wrong?
Row1: *K8 K2tog, repeat from *
Row 2: *K7 K2tog, repeat from *
Row 3:*K6 K2tog, repeat from *
Continue in this manner until you K2tog across the row. (6 sts remaining)
Break yarn, thread through stitches and tighten to close. Sew crown seam.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI posted a question to Shandeh a few days regarding the below-mentioned pattern.
I found that in following the instructions below that you do not come out with even numbers after doing the first three rows and you cannot do a k2tog - you can either end up with two stitches left over or one so how would you end up with knitting two across leaving six stitches. Or can you explain what I might be doing wrong? With the k8 it works out because it is an even stitch but you seem to come uneven in stitches when you k7.
As my first grandchild is soon to be born I would like to get this finished.
Can you help or explain this to me - it would be much appreciated.
Thank you.
Dorothy

Hello Dorothy,
ReplyDeleteYou might have lost or added a stitch before you began to work the back. The back should be worked with 60 stitches to begin with, which will make it work out properly.
Sometimes, a yarn-over or K2tog will be missed in the lace pattern. It happens to the best of us.
If you are frustrated, and don't want to start the bonnet back over again, just do an extra k2tog to make the stitches work out properly. I've done it myself. As long as it doesn't look bad to you, I'm sure the baby won't notice. Good luck!
Just to make sure, did you continue to decrease the number of knits before the k2tog as you went on in the pattern? The 4th row of the back should be "k5, k2tog". The 5th row would be "k4, k2tog". The 6th row would be "k3, k2tog", etc.
ReplyDeleteHi Shandeh,
ReplyDeleteYes,I do have the 60 stitches to work on for starting the back.
Now I know where I went wrong. I was repeating rows 1, 2 and 3 and not doing row 4, row 5 etc.
Thank you for clarifying that for me.
Dorothy
So glad I could help, Dorothy!
ReplyDeleteI you may not see this post, so long since your post, but just in case I want to thank you so much, I have been trawling for month's for a pretty bonnet pattern, I like to knit for my local hospital's SCBU. they will love it.

Hi everyone im not an advanced knitter however feather and fan pattern is easy and you can almost alter any pattern you are knitting I've knitted and altered quit a few patterns to accommodate patterns the key to feather and fan is you have to work in amounts of 8 for it to work even increasing and decreasing has to be in amounts of 8 otherwise the pattern does not work. if you short by a few stitches on a pattern use the next size up needle to accommodate the stitches lost and if its too many use the next size down to accommodate for it being to big this tends to work. It's worked for me. I hope this helps good luck
ReplyDeleteI just made this bonnet for my baby girl(bump) and it was easy to make and looks lovely very vintage looking..thanks for the beautiful free pattern xx
ReplyDeleteHello my name is Sue from Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada unfortunately I'm a tight knitter, tried a pattern for Feather & Fan, was a disaster, one side kept slanting inward after K2tog 3 times, I'm gonna try this one, I'm a self
